New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have shown men travel greater distances to get to work than women. Director of Census Dissemination Phillip Wise determined said these figures were seen in male dominated workplaces, where traveling to different locations and far-away places is necessary. “While most occupations averaged journeys under 17.0km… technicians and trade workers travelled an average of 18.2km to get to work. The exhibition was collaboratively put together by Louise Brand the Exhibitions Officer at the Art Gallery with the text panels written by Garry Jones a lecturer in Indigenous Studies at the University of Wollongong. A new program has been launched to help women feel and be safer in Wollongong. ‘I Belong in the Gong’ is in an attempt to combat the issue of harassment of women in the city’s CBD. Australia’s native flora will flourish in Mount Annan this spring thanks to the work of environmentalist to integrate native flowers into the urban landscape. About 20 members from Greening Australia, Camden Council and The Australia Botanic Gardens joined forces yesterday to plant native wildflowers at the roundabout on Mt Annan Drive opposite the entrance to the botanic gardens. This year marks a 10 year milestone for Campbelltown’s Knit and Giggle group, that, over laughs and knitting needles, create blankets for those in need. Every Monday afternoon, the group, founded by Bridget Byrne and Sheila Myers, gathers at the Campbelltown Library to knit blankets for the Wrapped with Love Campaign. Up to 18 members attend each week and, over the years, the women have created hundreds blankets and rugs to be distributed around the world.
