A new exhibition at the University of Wollongong library is literally revealing box-loads of international history. The 24 Boxes: Unpacking the Cochrane Papa New Guinea Collection exhibition is a collection of photos, audio, documentation and objects that represent Papua New Guinean culture and life as collected collected by the Cochrane family between 1949-66. The collection was one of the first to be digitised at UOW and has had 40,000 downloads. Art is said to be in the eye of the beholder, but these school holidays it has been in the hand of Illawarra students. Wollongong Art Gallery has held a series of workshops and activities to encourage and inspire creativity among the younger generation. Art educators have run workshops on everything from landscape painting to sculpture to origami. Some of the workshops engaged in different art practices and encouraged participants to explore different cultures. Coral bleaching has impacted the ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef and has now been detected in Sydney Harbour. Sydney university researchers said the bleaching aligned with a rise in temperature due to an El Niño event and could not be directly linked to climate change.
