Australia’s lack of progress in recognising the rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual+ community has pushed the nation behind numerous countries and contributed to a rise in mental health issues amongst LGBT+ youth, according to a report released yesterday. The findings, announced by Geneva-based, International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Intersex Association rate each country according to their laws relating to sexual orientation. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of the Cancer Council’s leading and most successful fundraisers of its kind. University of Wollongong Radiotherapy Physics Professor, Peter Metcalfe, received one of 15 grants awarded by the Cancer Council across New South Wales to fund vital research. The $429,000 grant will be used to develop radiation technology to treat cancer patients. The Tea is aiming to have 11,100 hosts to raise over $5 million this month to further life-saving cancer research, prevention and support programs for people living with cancer. The Illawarra Academy of Sport competed at the 2017 Clubs NSW Academy Games in the Central Coast over the weekend, taking the podium for boys hockey, girls rugby sevens and various triathlon events. The Games showcased the state’s best talent of academy athletes from 11 New South Wales regions, who competed in nine sports, ranging from basketball to triathlon. A rise of suicides in the Australian medical profession in recent months has sparked concern about the profession’s culture and ability to protect the mental health of its young workers. Four junior doctors have committed suicide in New South Wales in the past six months, contributing to a total of 20 doctors who have killed themselves in the past decade, according to a report conducted by NSW Coroner Michael Barnes. A new exhibition at the University of Wollongong library is digging up the past of one of the region’s iconic industries. The ‘Coal in the Illawarra’ exhibition honours the history of mining and its contribution to the region. Coal mining was one of the earliest industries within the area and has greatly impacted the economy, and the establishment of communities along the Illawarra coastline. A Sutherland Shire hero has raised $12,000 in a motorcycle ride for men’s health research, coinciding with Movember this month. Paul Degan was one of 50,000 riders over 500 cities worldwide riding a vintage motorcycle for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. “I decided to do the ride as since my wife died from breast cancer 10 years ago. I haven’t been involved in any charity work to raise money or awareness and I felt it was time,” Mr Degan said. The NSW Academy of Gymnastics has won the first State Club Championships for women’s gymnastics in NSW. The competition covered all disciplines (vault, bars, beam and floor) and had athletes compete across levels five to 10. Head coach and Academy director Bill Parsons spent three years developing a program for his athletes in preparation for the competition. Fourteen-year-old gymnast Jaymi Aronowitz competed in Level 8 and placed second overall.
