Wollongong Art Gallery has engaged a diverse lineup of artists from the South Coast and Illawarra to participate in the Indigenous Arts Festival. The festival will celebrate art, culture, and creativity. Guest curator, Tahjee Moar hopes the festival will be a platform to support local Indigenous talent. “From my knowledge, there hasn’t really been something like a festival to bring people together and showcase the diversity and the strengths of South Coast aboriginal art and culture to the community,” she said. The exhibition will incorporate different genres of art, including painting, writing, film, dance, performance, food, and visual arts. The Lord Mayor’s…

It all started back in 2009, when a group of girls came together and decided they wanted to learn how to roller derby. They taught themselves to skate in an empty car park. Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby (WIRD) was one of the first leagues to emerge in Australia, and has grown from humble beginnings. “It’s about team work and control and skill and fitness, and has the most amazing community of people from absolutely every walk of life,” President of WIRD Carlie Boyton, or ‘Ziggy Starbuster’, said. For her, it was a love story waiting to happen. “I have always loved rollerskating.…

April 4th, 4.20pm – the internationally recognised date designated to celebrating the use of cannabis, and the exact moment each year that weed enthusiasts all over the world raise a lighter and take a hit. Considering the growing popularity of this unofficial ‘holiday’ in Australia, despite the fact it is still illegal to smoke marijuana in all states, Australia has the highest rate of cannabis use in the world. About 35 per cent of the population claims to have used the drug before and 750,000 people smoke it every week. While Australian laws are yet to completely decriminalise the use…

It is imperative, as students, that we talk about feminism and how we can use it to change public views on violence against women. Today, in its broadest sense, feminism is about choice. A woman’s choice of clothing should never be considered an indication of her character, just as her choice to have a drink or be out at night is not an invite for a man to approach her and…
