Australian Financial Review readers in Western Australia were greeted to an error-laden front page over the weekend after someone “pressed a wrong button”. An early draft was published instead of the final layout, leaving some awkward fill-in text. The most memorable line from the disaster was, without doubt, this story summary: “Buys planes, world is fukt” We’re feeling a bit sorry for the poor people at the Financial Review. The embarrassment was made worse by the fact it was an ANZAC weekend edition, meaning copies remained on the shelf for three days. So are there any other newspapers that could’ve…

There were more than 930,000 visits to Wollongong libraries in the 2012-13 financial year, but funding them is a growing issue. Wollongong councillors on Monday declared their support for a NSW Public Library Associations campaign to increase state government funding for libraries, the Illawarra Mercury reported. It is hoped that this campaign can secure an additional $200,000 annually for local libraries. Today, UOWTV Multimedia is looking at the role of Wollongong libraries and changes that are taking place. Journalists are working on a written report on this week’s developments, an audio report on the growing importance of audiobooks within libraries…
On the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide, UOW research fellow Dr Deborah Mayersen said the international community still has work to do to honour the victims of the tragedy. The Rwandan genocide took place for roughly 100 days from 7 April, 1994 to mid-July, with the death toll estimated to be between 500,000 and 1,000,000. Dr Mayersen said there are still lessons to be learned from the tragedy. “There’s been a number of major reports that have come out in the wake of the genocide in Rwanda,” said Dr Mayersen, pointing to UN reports and other reports from the…
A major overnight graffiti incident at the Northfields Avenue bus stop will cost UOW close to $1000 to clean up. Cleaning staff were sent to the stop this morning to deal with the mess, but an external contractor will need to be brought in to finish the job. UOW Manager of Enivronmental Services David Low spoke to UOWTV and revealed the extent of the clean-up efforts.
Michael DiFabrizio documents the street art of Wollongong. Are you receiving free therapy without realizing? Earlier this year, Wollongong was ranked as the happiest city in Australia. Philosopher Alain de Botton has championed the benefits of art and its influence on the emotional state of a community. In his book, Art as Therapy, de Botton and art historian John Armstrong proposed a new way of viewing well-known masterpieces: that the works can be therapeutic for their audience. This approach to art is not unusual, with the practice of art therapy becoming more common in Australia in the past…
UOW students said they’ve waited 40-45 minutes for a Gong Shuttle amid calls for the state’s transport department to fund extra free bus services. This afternoon UOWTV Multimedia put the green bus to the test, tallying passenger numbers on the 55A loop and comparing them to the Gong Shuttle’s usual load. The test revealed the need for extra services may be limited to the ‘peak’ times of morning and late afternoon. Commerce student Harry Gehrig said he was used to waiting for a bus to arrive. “It’s always late, I waited 45 minutes the other day for it,” Mr Gehrig said. Another bus…
