Research has revealed Australian female sporting teams receive less funding despite evidence to suggest there is equal participation by males and females. To assist in closing this gap identified by the Australian Sports Commission, the Team Harvey Norman Junior initiative will provide 10, $5000 sponsorships to women’s and girl’s sporting teams across the country. Protesting students crashed the official launch of a new Rail Engineer Infrastructure Training Centre at the University of Wollongong. The students were part of the Wollongong Socialists Club and protested cuts to university funding and a potential increase in tertiary education fees. They targeted the event because Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham was the guest speaker. The protesters stood on the level above the launch and chanting: “No cuts, no fees, no corporate universities” until they were ushered out of the building by UOW security. Police were also called. Children across Australia and New Zealand gathered in classrooms, libraries, bookshops, and childcare centres today for National Simultaneous Storytelling, an annual event where the same story is read to kids across the nation. A large-scale international study has found regular exercise could work to prevent depression from developing in individuals at a rate of around 15 per cent. The international research team behind the study, including researchers from Australian institutions, including The Black Dog Institute, UNSW Sydney, and Western Sydney University, analysed data from studies across the globe and concluded physical activity can prevent instances of depression. The Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands region has the highest number of unemployed youth in New South Wales, according to a report released this week. The region’s youth unemployment rate has grown to 28.9 per cent for under 24-year-olds, more than double the national rate. The Brotherhood of St Laurence report drew on Australian Bureau of Statistics. The report revealed the national youth unemployment rate to be 12.2 per cent, and highlighted the Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands as the second hottest spot for youth unemployment in the country. The Violence Abuse and Neglect (VAN) service is an invaluable resource for victims of sexual and domestic assault in the Illawarra area, according to those at its helm. The service, which operating out of a number of discreet locations to keep victims safe from previous and ongoing violence, is the product of a 2013 merger of three domestic violence support services. It is part of The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District and is housed in community health centres in Warilla, Wollongong and Dapto.
