National Simultaneous Storytelling event combines yoga with reading

Children across Australia and New Zealand gathered in classrooms, libraries, bookshops, and childcare centres today for National Simultaneous Storytelling, an annual event where the same story is read to kids across the nation.

The event is in its 18th year, and in 2018, the book being read all over the country is Hickory Dickory Dash, a story about a mouse who loses her sons and must find them before a sneaky cat pounces.

The UOW Early Start Discovery Space participated in the event for the second year in a row, but with a twist – the reading of the story was combined with an interactive kid-friendly yoga session to get the kids twisting and turning while enjoying the story.

The introduction of the yoga helps the kids to engage with the story while also learning the breathing, stretching and relaxation techniques associated with yoga and all of the health benefits that come along with it.
