What is Ramadan?
According to the National Geographic, Muslims believe that Ramadan signifies the time that the prophet Muhammad received a revelation in 610 AD which led to the writing of the Islamic holy book, the Quran. The muslim community fasts during this time to commemorate the importance and holiness of this revelation.
The Atlanta Journal reports that fasting during Ramadan is seen as one of the 5 pillars of Islam faith, and signifies a time which allows space to grow spiritually and draw closer to the Muslim god, Allah.

For the muslim community, the month of Ramadan is viewed as a holy time for purification.
