Illawarra martial arts and jiu jitsu gyms are ready to take matters into their own hands over the next few weeks following the reported rise in violence towards women.

Gabriel Olivera, from Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Wollongong, said teaching women to protect themselves was a crucial step in reducing the number of women killed by men.

Jiu jitsu has become an increasingly popular choice for young people and people of smaller body mass because it teaches the more technical skills required to overcome potential physical threats.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a National Cabinet today to address violence against women as a national emergency and pledged to do more to help victims of violence.

Statistics show 27 women have died of male violence between January and April 2024, amounting to one woman every four days.

First 2 Strike Freestyle Martial Arts in Wollongong and Shoto Karate in Victoria are two of several centres nationwide that will offer free workshops to help combat women’s violence.
