    Heartbreak for home country

As the death toll rises and news continues to spread about the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal, a group of UOW students have pulled together to raise funds for their home country.

Students in the UOW Nepalese Society have gathered outside the UOW library for the past two days in the hope of raising funds to assist the Nepal recovery effort.

“We’re trying to raise money, sleeping bags, tents and [supplies] that are needed the most,” said UOW Nepalese Society President Sunita Shrestha.

“I’m lucky that my family is safe but many are still fearing the affects of aftershocks.”

After one day of raising funds, the students and staff of UOW had generously donated just over $2170 towards the appeal.

As rescue efforts are hampered by aftershocks, it is estimated the country has suffered over 5,000 deaths, 11,000 injuries and 400,000 left homeless.
