The University of Wollongong’s latest student residence was officially opened yesterday, having hosted students since the beginning of the year. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wellings, Deputy Chancellor Noel Cornish, Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward, guests and residents were on hand to roll out the welcome mat at Bangalay. An innovative new product was introduced to the drone market yesterday, combining the concepts of the GoPro and Selfie Stick with UAV technology. Lily, popularly dubbed “the selfie drone” was unveiled to the world with a beautiful promo video, reminiscent of the excitement produced by the first GoPro promo video. The video accumulated just under 200 000 hits in 48 hours. Lily’s most distinctive feature is her controls, or lack thereof. Unlike most other commercial drones on the market, which use sophisticated radio controllers or smartphone apps, Lily operates almost entirely automatically. Artist-owned music streaming service TIDAL relaunched yesterday, but will it make waves, or see the return of the pirates? Jay-Z has today relaunched his newly acquired music streaming service TIDAL. The rapper was joined by Beyoncé, Daft Punk, Kanye West, members of Coldplay, Usher and many more big-name artists and acts for the launch event. The premium streaming service is considerably more expensive than its competitors, but provides the highest quality ‘bitrate’ on the market. Only time will tell if TIDAL’s celebrity backing and premium quality will translate to success.

The NSW Police Games have drawn to a close with the runing of the half marathon along the Illawarra coastline. The Games, held for the first time outside of Sydney, have been labelled  success by participants and organisers. Events ranged from golf to paintball. As the death toll rises and news continues to spread about the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal, a group of UOW students have pulled together to raise funds for their home country. Students in the UOW Nepalese Society have gathered outside the UOW library for the past two days in the hope of raising funds to assist the Nepal recovery effort. “We’re trying to raise money, sleeping bags, tents and [supplies] that are needed the most,” said UOW Nepalese Society President Sunita Shrestha. “I’m lucky that my family is safe but many are still fearing the affects of aftershocks.” After…

An Australian Bureau of Statistics report has identified 18-24-year-olds as the nation’s poorest eaters – consuming more soft drink, burgers and chips, and less fruit and vegetables than the rest of the population.
