A bid by the Christian Democrats and Shooters Parties to have the ban on state MPs from serving in local governments extend to federal MPs has failed.

The result means Member for Gilmore Joanna Gash remains free to contest the Shoalhaven Mayoral election before she steps down from federal politics next year.

Gash told ABC Illawarra she was disappointed the Christian Democrats wanted the bill amended to ban federal MPs from holding dual roles. “The only federal MP it would affect is myself and I was very disappointed to see that the Christian Democrats’ Paul Green actually supported that amendment,” she said.
