According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Illawarra has one of the highest unemployment rates in New South Wales due to its lack of job vacancies.  As of January 2025, the median amount of time it takes for the average person to find work in the Illawarra is almost 50 weeks, well above the state average.
