The NSW Academy Games are underway, with 11 academies of sport competing in seven sports across Wollongong and Shellharbour over the next three days. “The ClubsNSW Academy Games is a significant sporting and community event that will bring many benefits to the Illawarra,” Illawarra Academy of Sport General Manager Carolyn Dews said. “Participants are all representatives of Regional Academies of Sport throughout the state, so we’ll be seeing some future Australian champions in action.”
The Illawarra Academy of Sport will host the ClubsNSW Academy Games for the first time from April 13-15. The ClubsNSW games will bring together almost 1000 competitors from across New South Wales in seven different sports, including basketball, hockey, rugby union, lawn bowls, netball, golf and, for the first time, cycling. Illawarra will be joined by academies of Sport representing Western Region, Central Coast, Far West, Hunter, North Coast, Northern Inland, South East, Southern, South-West Sydney and Western-Sydney. Young golfers from around New South Wales will tackle some of the best and toughest golf courses in the Illawarra as part of the ClubsNSW Academy Games. The competition begins on Friday (April 13) when competitors tee off at Kembla Grange. On Saturday they tackle the difficult Shellharbour Links Course, followed by the Wollongong Golf Club on Sunday. The golf competition represents young male and female golfers from 10 NSW Academies of Sport, with their handicaps ranging from the low single figures to 12 (for males) and 16 (for females). Young hockey player Daniel Olsen is one of almost 1000 up and coming sports stars competing in the ClubsNSW Academy Games in the Illawarra this weekend (April 13-15). Daniel, 15, is playing in his second games, having represented the Illawarra Academy of Sport in Armidale last year. A member of the Albion Park Club, he plays in both the Under 17 and Second Grade competitions. The ClubsNSW Academy Games will bring an expected 1,000 young athletes together from Friday. The athletes will take part in seven sports across three days of competition.
