Wollongong’s $19.4 million Crown Street Mall refurbishment is one step closer to completion, with the removal of the outdated ‘birdcage’ this week. The upper part of the Mall now boasts a more spacious and modern feel, surprising shop goers in yesterday’s wet weather. Efforts to upgrade the 30-year-old mall are part of Council efforts to revitalise the Wollongong City Centre. Wollongong City Council will also work with Sydney Water to replace the 80-year-old water pipes running below the precinct. The works are expected to take five weeks. The public is set to get a taste of how we might live in the future, with Team UOW’s completed entry into the Solar Decathlon China 2013 competition to go on show at the Innovation Campus from next week. The zero-energy home was transformed from simple fibro shack over 12 weeks by the 40 strong team from the University of Wollongong and the TAFE Illawarra Institute.
