Aircraft enthusiasts from across Australia will flock to the Illawarra this weekend to witness history at one of the Illawarra’s premier tourist events, the Wings Over Illawarra air show. In the next two years, Wollongong ratepayers will contribute around $6.4 million more than they did last year to Wollongong council, boosting the city’s total yearly budget to a whopping $190 million. The rates will make up around 61% of the city’s annual income, with fees, chargers and other revenues making up around $45.3 million, as well as 44.7 million from capital grants and contributions. An assembly of gender equality enthusiasts have marched through the streets of Wollongong CBD to protest violence and harassment against women. A large crowd gathered at the Civic Plaza in Wollongong yesterday, before moving to the amphitheater in Wollongong mall for the annual Reclaim the Night event. Centre Against Violence contract trainer Jackylnn Draper said the community needed to acknowledge the existence of gender inequality for things to change. “The way forward to change this, is for men in leadership positions to be taking on these issues and taking on men for the violence that they use,” Ms Draper said.…
A contingent of Wollongong Police officers have travelled to Canberra to honour their fallen colleagues at the National Police Remembrance Day. Large crowds turned out last month for the police memorial, with the service to take place at the Wall of Remembrance which has the names of all the fallen victims.
