An Illawarra drag queen is behind a social initiative designed to support queer artists affected by the cancellation of upcoming performances under COVID-19 restrictions. James Christie-Murray, who performs as Pablo and is the founder of Queer Space, started the #BuyATicket initiative to provide direct donations to local queer artists who have lost gigs. “The initiative involves buying a virtual ticket to a show you would go to, like Queer AF or a local drag show, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to local artists who are out of work at the moment,” he said. A decision to loosen COVID-19 restrictions on beauty salon operations has sparked confusion within the industry. The NSW government announced on the weekend beauty salons can open to sell retail products and mobile beauty services were also given the green light. Mobile services can operate where they are not in the service provider’s home provided social distancing is followed when visiting a client’s home. Beauty therapists are still not permitted to provide beauty services from retail locations. Chip Roll Fest 2020, the University of Wollongong UniBar’s first celebration of the chip roll, has been cancelled. The cancellation followed the federal government’s ban on gatherings of over 100 people to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The event was to be held on 25 March, with over 1,300 expected to attend. A chip roll-eating competition was on the event’s menu. More than 12,500 chip rolls were consumed at the UOW Unibar last year. Labor members of parliament are being challenged to defend party policy by Illawarra refugee activists. The Refugee Action Collective Illawarra (RAC) will target local Labor politicians as part of a strategy to change refugee policy, and to mark Refugee Week later this month.
