The National Party’s Stephen Wentworth is the only Coalition candidate in the Whitlam electorate, with no Liberal candidate nominated. Previously the electorate of Throsby, the division was renamed Whitlam ahead of the last federal election after the death of the former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. The seat has been held by Labor since its creation in 1984. Mr Wentworth lives in the Highlands with his wife and two children, and runs a boutique agri-consulting business. Women in sport are among the winners in last night’s federal budget. The budget included a $150 million allocation to remove barriers that limit female participation in sport, including the upgrade community swimming facilities. While female participation rates have increased over the past year, the Australian Government hopes to see the numbers continue to grow. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a new immigration policy encouraging migrants to move to areas outside of the big capital cities, possibly increasing rates of immigration to Wollongong. The policy focuses on capping Australia’s permanent migrant intake at 160,000 a year, but also offers incentives to move to regional areas and outside of major cities.
