Wollongong City Council is looking at ways to encourage University of Wollongong alumni to find permanent work in the Illawarra region. Outlined in council’s latest Economic Development Strategy for 2019-29, a goal has been set to create more than 10,500 new jobs across the next decade. The document outlines that the median income can also be raised for the area, if more focus is put on generating new jobs in industries that are higher paying. Arts is being used to raise awareness of the damage made by plastic and other man-made waste to marine eco systems. ‘Plastic Life’, a new exhibition at the Ocean Space Collective in Wollongong, showcases artwork by University of Wollongong alumnus, including photographer Aristo Risi, textile artists Eliza Tame and Shantel Cvetkovski and the artistic collective Reuse Reefcycle. Despite the promise of $500m towards upgrading the Princes Highway, South coast locals have been left confused after the Opposition claimed it couldn’t find the money in last night’s budget. A Wollongong tech company has created an intelligent transport tag that will allow drivers to benefit from evolving inter-connected transport systems. V-DAQ has created the V-SAFE tag that the company says enables vehicles, regardless of age, make or class, to talk to smart traffic lights, cities, roads and emergency services, and includes everything needed for vehicles to operate in the future of automated mobility.
