Ten to 15 per cent of people aged 65 and over will experience clinical depression, but they are less likely than younger people to seek professional help for it. They often do not discuss their feelings with peers or doctors for fear of being stigmatised. The Australian Men’s Shed Association aims to create an environment where the elderly – and young people suffering from the same issues – can go to work on practical projects and talk with each other about the problems they’re facing. Menai Men’s Shed has been instrumental in improving the wellbeing and self-worth of its members — elderly men from the Sutherland Shire.
