Wollongong’s Dog Day goes beyond puppy playtime

North Gong Dog Day might just look like fun and games, but behind the pats and pics, there’s a powerful mission driving efforts to find forever homes for furry friends in need.

Last Saturday, Pound Paws’ and the North Gong Hotel collaborated for the ninth year in a row, bringing together dog lovers for a day of wiggle-worthy contests and activities.

However, amongst the celebrations were some four-legged guests still waiting for a home.

Brittany Bloomer, 32, founder of Pound Paws, launched the organisation and its events to raise awareness for pet adoption and local rescue groups, securing even some pups a new home.

“The sense of community is beautiful. It’s my favourite day ever. The cherry on top is finding out about the adoption stories,”

“Some people don’t come planning to adopt, but they meet a dog and form a beautiful bond, and that’s it,” she said.

Bloomer recalled one of her most cherished stories – a dog who found a new home at this year’s event after Pound Paws found him wandering the streets. Some rescue dogs can wait over 500 days in shelters.

Kaylee, 30, a member of the Animal Trust Society, said the efforts raised awareness for animals in their care, sparking huge interest from potential owners.

“We love doing events like the North Gong Dog Day, it’s a great opportunity to hopefully lessen the number of pets going to the pound,” she said.

Rescue groups are currently reviewing applications for adoption expressions of interest, with outcomes expected to be released in the coming weeks.
