Young musicians are preparing to take the stage at the Red Shield Appeal Concert this Saturday, where they will perform to raise funds for locals in need.
The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music’s (WollCon) Symphonic Band will play alongside the WollCon’s Youth Flute Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, and the Wollongong Salvation Army Brass Band.
WollCon Symphonic Band and flute ensembles conductor, Suzanne Cowan, said the concert is a great opportunity for the kids to apply their craft.
“It’s good for them to develop a sense of community and play for charity, not just for themselves,” Ms Cowan said.
Wollongong Salvation Army Corps Officer Dr. Lt Col Lyn Edge said the concert is a major event for the fundraising campaign, and important in supporting their community programs.
“The concert is one of our flagship events … music’s such a valuable part of our society, so we love partnering with the Conservatorium,” Dr. Edge said.
“Here in Wollongong, that’s [funding] a drop-in centre for emergency financial assistance … but also in our region we have family domestic violence services and family supports.”
Donations will be accepted in-person at the Saturday concert at 6:30pm, as well as online.
