Walking football participation rises ahead of 2025 Walk the Field

Football South Coast’s Walk the Field 2025 will get underway on Saturday, with the tournament doubling in numbers from 15 teams to around 30 teams this time around.

Walk the Field 2025 is a walking football tournament in Wollongong aimed at Women over 40 and Men over 50 as a social day out on the field. As part of their course, some University of Wollongong marketing students have facilitated this year’s event, attracting sponsors and working out the logistics for the day. The project was originally set up by UOW academic Dr Mercedez Hinchcliff in 2023, and is now run by Grant Hughes, partnering with the Illawarra’s governing football association, Football South Coast.

UOW marketing student Aiden Southwell said he has enjoyed the process of getting the competition up and running.

“Everything is hands-on with this particular subject,” Mr Southwell said.

“It’s really interesting to see everything go from just a scaffold to a final product.

“It’s very beneficial particularly for students because we’re able to see the direct progress.”

Walk the Field 2025 begins on Saturday at Ian McLennan Park, Kembla Grange.
