Digital streaming platforms have exploded in the last decade and now account for 65% of global music listening. Streaming services often dictate how individuals consume their music and low prices have meant many small-scale and independent artists are struggling to financially support themselves.

One of the artist who struggle to make ends meet through their music is Illawarra DJ Nicche.

“Gigs and playing live shows is probably the biggest source of income, but alternative streaming services, such as Bandcamp, assist in supporting artists such as myself,” DJ Nicche said.

English singer-songwriter James Blake took to Instagram to call out the treatment of musicians about cuts from record labels and streaming sales.

In an attempt to disrupt the system, Blake has announced the launch of his new platform Vault.FM, similar to Patreon, where the middleman is cut out and music is not gate-kept from fans of these artists.
