The University of Wollongong’s (UOW) netball team is set to compete in Canberra for the highly anticipated UniSport Nationals from 9 September.

This competition will see top university teams from across Australia play in both women’s and mixed competitions at the ACT Netball Centre in Lyneham. Teams will compete in four 12-minute quarters, with semifinals and medal matches extending to four 15-minute quarters.

Goal Defence player, Alice Coleman, said the UOW team has been preparing since mid-May.

“The squad has been training once a week, with sessions focusing on fitness, netball drills, and game play. We started preparing pretty much straight away from when we found out,” Alice said.

“Our team is student-led, which has its pros and cons, but we train how we want to, and our team knows what is best.”

One of the standout aspects of the UOW team is the strong bond among the players. Many have played together before, forming a cohesive group.

“A lot of us play together or have played together previously. The team consists of a lot of strong friendships, which makes us a positive team.”

These friendships will create a significant advantage as the girls head into competition, where teamwork and morale play crucial roles on the court.

The UOW netball team is hoping to secure a few wins, but Alice said that their primary goal is to just enjoy the experience.

“We are hoping for a week full of fun and laughter.

“A couple of wins would be nice! But really, we’re just hoping for a fabulous week with some incredible people.”

UniSport will also offer free transport for attendees on any Transport Canberra bus or light rail service, making it easy for teams and supporters to get around the city.

As the UOW netball team prepares to take on some of the best university squads in Australia, they carry with them the support of the entire UOW community.

Here’s to a fantastic week of competition, teamwork, and hopefully, a few victories!
