The UOW Motorsports Club celebrated their annual Launch Night Tuesday night.
The Launch Night is held to thank the team’s 2023 sponsors. Some of this year’s sponsors include Komatsu, iAccelerate, Bluescope Community Partners and consistent with each year, the University is a large sponsor.
The club’s Business Director, Connor Harvey, said the night went swimmingly and was a chance for the team to not only thank the sponsors but create connections for opportunities in the future.
Each year the club competes in The Formula SAE competition in November held in Winton, Victoria.
For the competition, the team must create and build an open-wheel, formula-style race car to compete against 29 other teams in a range of static and dynamic events over three days.
Interestingly, the car is built with an electric motor over an internal combustion engine which requires petrol to run. Technical Director Ethan Medway says the electric motor is more powerful and paves a sustainable future for the racing industry.
Currently, the team is getting the chassis of their car shipped from Sydney and will start the long hours involved in building their specimen during the university mid-year break.
Last year the team came second in the SAE competition but has a strong plan to improve this year’s car and bring home the win.
The club will host a formal reveal night in early November to showcase its final product before the competition.
