A record-high number of voters have cast their ballot early ahead of the federal election, according to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

So far, about six million Australians have voted ahead of the polls in an unprecedented early turnout for federal election.

Over three million people have cast their ballot through early voting centres, while over two and a half million have voted by mail.

In a statement, the AEC said more people needed to consider voting early and remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The AEC reminded voters they can attend the election in person, even if they are a COVID close contact.
