The University of Wollongong senior hockey side capped off an undefeated regular season with a 6-2 win over Robertson at home today.
The result saw the University end its season with 48 points after 18 games, a total that saw them claim the minor premiership by four points over Wests Illawarra. The side only failed to win three matches this season, instead picking up a draw against Wests and two draws against Albion Park RSL.
The 1st Grade’s undefeated streak now extends to 28 matches across two seasons, having last lost in June 2015, where they went down 3-2 to Albion Park.
Captain Nick Jennings said the achievement was a great reward for the side, but the team’s focus is already on the finals.
“The second half I thought we were quite poor, we lost [the half] 1-0, just a few simple team mistakes and individual mistakes cost us,” Jennings said.
“All in all you can’t complain to head into a finals series off a 6-2 win.”
A small but enthusiastic crowd watched University boost their momentum heading into the finals.
Third grade player Anthony Russell was one of the many University players in the crowd.
“You can pick up a lot about your own game just watching them play,” Russell said.
“It lets you identify what is the right and wrong things to do on the field at any given time.”
The University side has been the deadliest side in the league, with players Heath Ogilvie and Landon Morley scoring a combined 55 goals for the side this season. The University has also been without the use of Kookaburras squad member Flynn Ogilvie for a large portion of the season, with the player participating in the Champions Trophy for Australia.
The University will face Wests Illawarra next weekend in the Major Semi Final, with the winner of the match advancing straight to the Grand Final on September 11.
