Destination Wollongong is forging new attractions for the region introducing a new mountain bike trail to join the growing list of tourist drawcards for the area.
Tourism business development manager Tracy Pascoe said the bike trail is expected to be opened at the end of the year.
According to Ms Pascoe the main priority for the city is the emphasis on investing in tourism infrastructure, that aligns with their destination management plan.
“By fostering a robust local economy, we can enhance amenities for both residents and visitors, creating a better quality of life and a more attractive destination,” Ms Pascoe said.
“We have a commitment to building a vibrant, thriving community & region.”
Wollongong is NSW’s third largest city, but the strategy is not to become the “ next Sydney “ or the Gold Coast.
“Wollongong aims to carve out its own identity rather than become a smaller version of Sydney,” Ms Pascoe said.
“We celebrate our unique cultural, natural attractions, and historical assets that distinguish us, while also drawing inspiration from successful urban models to enhance our own community.”
The popular tourism company also reinforced its take on the competitive landscape with other popular tourist destinations such as its neighbouring towns, Kiama and Shellharbour.
The region’s work together to attract more tourists, with the main focus being the Grand Pacific Drive.
“We work collaboratively with other regions on the South Coast and Southern Highlands to promote the wider region, including Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven, & Southern Highlands via the Grand Pacific Drive,“ Ms Pascoe said.
“ We also partner with Destination NSW as well as Tourism Australia to drive awareness and promote our destination as a premier travel destination.”
A partnering business with destination Wollongong is Treetop Walking Illawarra, which lays claim to the “highest zipline in Australia.“.
“We leverage digital platforms, social media, and partnerships with local businesses and the travel/tourism industry to reach a wide audience, promoting Wollongong as an accessible and welcoming destination,” she said.
