Dental Health Week commences on the 5th of August with oral health being their main focus.

The annual health campaign kicked off on Monday and is focusing on the steps towards taking care of your teeth and gums with the help of Pacific Smiles Colouring in Competition.

Oral Practitioner, Dr Haritha Singade, said diet plays an important role in good oral health and thinks educating children can make a difference.

“As with diet these days we are seeing a lot of high sugar intake and we need to step in as a society to teach them the correct dietary habits and diet takes a big role in good oral health or bad oral health,” Dr Singade said.

Gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes and inflammatory bowel disease.

“What we recommend is having sugars that you want to have is only limited to 1 day a week, so diet wise you can enjoy a variety of fruit, veggies, legumes, nuts and stuff and the sugar intake is all about frequency of sugar and also amount of sugar,” Dr Singade said.

Brushing your teeth with the correct technique and right toothpaste is step towards the right direction to fight disease along with the recommended clean/checkup every six months from your Oral Practitioner.
