The 2025 Met Gala has marked a groundbreaking year in money raised for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, making it the most financially successful gala to date.

While the fashion at the Met takes the spotlight, its fundraising remains its backbone and reinforces the event’s influence beyond celebrity spectacle.

Held first Monday of May each year, the Met Gala isn’t just a fundraiser, but one of the most watched red carpet events each year, marking itself a canvas for political and social commentary.

With tickets reportedly costing up to $75,000 USD in 2025, the event attracts a tightly curated guest list of designers, celebrities, and influential figures.

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” paid homage to black fashion, with a sub-focus on men’s fashion, and its deep rooted influence on global culture.

The theme invited not only aesthetic celebration but also pointed political reflection. Many attendees responded by spotlighting black designers, wearing garments that referenced cultural heritage, or using the opportunity to address systemic inequality.

Actor Jeff Goldblum arrived at the Met Gala in a suit and oversized, fur-lined coat from designer Wales Bonner. Goldblum spoke on what men’s fashion meant to him on the red carpet.

“It’s a gesture, it’s a protest in a way and I support it wholeheartedly,” Goldblum said.

Historical data also supports the idea that politically charged fashion often correlates with thematically relevant galas.

As shown in the chart above, the themes of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” sparked more political statements than conceptual themes like “Camp” or “Heavenly Bodies”.

The 2025 theme, rooted explicitly in black cultural identity, has followed this trend by encouraging attendees to think critically about fashion’s relationship to race, history, and power.

Fashion enthusiast Alana Tran said even though the event seems out of touch for regular people, she’s glad the money raised is for a good cause.

“It’s definitely out of touch and dystopian,” Miss Tran said.

“But the money goes to charity so that’s better than nothing.”
