Teal independent Nicolette Boele is the provisional winner of Bradfield, taking the seat by just 39 votes.
Many media outlets had Liberal’s Gisele Kapterian as a running favourite for the seat, having just won preselection after Paul Fletcher announced he would not be seeking reelection.
The Liberals has held Bradfield since the electorate’s inception in 1949, and Fletcher had held the seat since 2009.
It is the first time Bradfield will have a non-Liberal MP.
As less than 100 votes separate Boele and Kapterian, a recount will occur, in the meantime Boele has been named the provisional winner.
UOW Associate Professor in International Relations and Critical Political Economy, Tim DiMuzio said overall Labor was celebrating a landslide win.
“It sure was a landslide victory, and I don’t think many commentators at the time suspected such a majority,” Mr DiMuzio said.
“My suspicion is largely that it has to do with the cost of living crisis, the housing crisis and energy/climate change policies.
“The Coalition itself is largely divided on many of those issues, and I don’t think they have a vision for the future of Australia that is focused on well-being and sustainability/community.
“So they are in real trouble going forward.
“That’s not to say that Labor is perfect, but just that the alternative is far worse.”
The young Liberal movement is starting to push back against the traditional ideals of the party, demanding the need for better policies and better marketing strategies.
Members of the party have spoken out across all platforms on how to better the LNP.
Even back in 2022, after the Albanese government’s first election win, The Young Liberals Movement of Australia sought better action on climate, women policies.
