The price of Nintendo’s Switch 2 was recently revealed at almost $700, making it the most expensive Nintendo console to date and a big jump from the $469 price of the original Switch.

While there is excitement amongst gamers for the new console, UOW Pokémon Society president Sonia May Murray, is holding some reservations.

‘I don’t [think the Switch 2 is much of an upgrade to the Switch]. The console’s features don’t really interest me,” she said.

“The Switch was cool, but this is just a Switch plus, not anything substantial.”

It’s not the first time this sentiment has surrounded a new Nintendo console and price jump, with fans offering similar sentiments for both the Wii U and the 3DS.

Looking at the total units sold for each console as listed on Nintendo’s Website, both the 3DS and Wii U had big drops in sales compared to their cheaper predecessors they were meant to replace.

The Wii U sold about 88 million less units than the Wii, and the 3DS sold about 78 million less units than the DS.

Ms Murray believes the Switch 2 could follow this trend and not live up to the Switch.

“I think it will follow in the 3DS’s footsteps, dropping in price a year after release because no one bought it,” she said.

“I don’t think it will be a flop like the Wii U, and I don’t think It’ll be close to the success of the Switch, but those are extremes.

“I think it’ll be a moderate success.”
