The students who make up the majority of the Gong Shuttle’s commuters claim they will be hit hardest if the 2018-2019 NSW State Budget doesn’t include full funding for the service.
One student said the free shuttle was “one of the reasons” she chose to come on exchange to the University of Wollongong.
The university and Wollongong City Council are in talks with the New South Wales state government in an attempt to bridge the gap left by the government’s proposed 25 per cent reduction in funding for the bus service.
If an agreement can’t be reached before the new financial year, commuters may be required to pay for the shuttle.
“Anyone who has ever been a student knows that money is very tight and it’s hard to come by, particularly when you’re trying to balance casual work and full time study,” ALP Member for Keira Ryan Park said.
