The Multicultural Communities Council Illawarra organises sports and recreational activities for all youth during the school holiday period.
Youth worker of the Multicultural Communities Council Illawarra, Emily Duncan said the activities help youngsters keep fit and have fun.
“We run a suite of fun programs and activities that are aimed basically to get young people outside, having fun and doing new things,” Miss Duncan said.
Miss Duncan said it the events included an outdoor cinema, soccer and volleyball on the beach.
“There are over 400 families that MCCI works with within the Illawarra and we are inviting as many people as possible to come to the outdoor movie night,” she said.
Miss Duncan discusses the role of MCCI and how long their programs and the overall establishment has existed.
“The MCCI has been an organisation since 1975, the youth work has been happening for 20 years in Illawarra, and the school holiday programs have always been a part of that,” Miss Duncan said.
“It’s basically to provide the space for young people to connect and it has been happening for many years and I hope for every school holidays we can offer different things to many young people.”
Participant Nora Smith said the program has supported her socially with the opportunity to meet new people.
“Like when you open yourself up to these different people and you get to know different people, you learn a lot from it as well so I really enjoy it,” Miss Smith said.
“I’ve never met the same person twice so far so it’s always very interesting to see new people but like nevertheless either way, it’s always really very fun and I feel like anyone who comes is also coming for the same reasons which is just like having fun.”
The activities provided by the MCCI school holiday program will continue during the summer months.
