1 – REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT TOO SLOW
A spokesperson for Wollongong’s refugee action collective, Cath Blakey, has labelled the government’s resettlement of refugee’s ‘too slow.’
BLAKEY: I think it’s great that Syrian refugees are starting to be resettled in Wollongong but I think the process has been very slow.
The criticism comes as yesterday members of Australia’s Assyrian community called the federal governments resettlement of the promised 12,000 refugees as frustrating.
Last year, the government announced it would resettle 12,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq, however only a handful of families have arrived since December.
2 – CALLS FOR AFP TO INVESTIGATE CLIVE PALMER
Federal MP Ewen Jones has called for the Australian Federal Police and Australian Taxation Office to investigate Clive Palmer after Queensland Nickel went into administration.
Jones told parliament last night he believed the nickel refinery was used by Palmer to move assets and cash, with no intention of paying staff entitlements to his employees.
Jones also says as ‘shadow director’ for the refinery, Palmer was aware of the exploitation of staff and should be held responsible by government agencies.
JONES: There can be no doubt he has operating as a controlling influence and shadow director here. There can be no doubt that the only interests he was serving were his own. There can be no doubt that the people who have given their working lives, who have done nothing wrong here, are just playthings for this man and a thing to throw away.
3 – PETER MOODY AVOIDS BAN
Prominent horse trainer Peter Moody has avoided a three-year ban after being cleared of deliberately administrating illegal levels of cobalt into stallion Lidari, but was charged with two lesser offences.
Victoria’s Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board handed down the decision today after Moody was charged for three offences of administering the performance-enhancing drug following the 2014 Turnbull Stakes.
The appeal for the lesser charges will be heard at a later date.
4 – MELBOURNE MURDER
A body found in a side street of Melbourne yesterday has been identified as a lawyer who acted for notorious criminals.
There are reports of a 6 figure price on the man’s head, leading Police to believe it may have been an assassination.
Detective inspector Mick Hughes says the man was shot after leaving work late yesterday morning.
HUGHES: It does appear to be targeted and as our investigation unfolds today and over the next few days we’ll probably know more about that. We have an early report that a witness has heard a car traveling down that street away from Lygon at a reasonably high speed.
