The Illawarra region is set to celebrate the AFL Indigenous round locally, with Port Kembla hosting an event on Saturday.

There will be three matches played on the day, and teams will wear their Indigenous strip.

With a large Indigenous community and presence in the local area, the event aims to raise awareness of Indigenous culture.

Former AFL player and 2019 ambassador Michael Long said the Indigenous round provided opportunity for the players and supporters.

“I’m proud of football and what it’s done to change, to give opportunity to the aboriginal players and our women as well,” Long said.
