First 2 Strike martial arts school in Woonona has launched a new women’s self-defence program to raise awareness about domestic abuse.

Owner of First 2 Strike, Vince Serra, 52, said he has always wanted to introduce a women’s self-defence program and was encouraged by the response from the public.

“With encouragement from my peers I was able to make this happen straight away,” Mr Serra said.

“In Woonona I feel like we needed to find something more for women’s needs in regards to protection.”

Mr Serra has explained that self-defence for women needed to be a long-term commitment so as to build confidence and self-esteem.

One in four women, or 27 per cent of women have experienced some sort of abuse after the age of 15 in NSW, according to statistics released this month by the Bureau of Crime and Research.

“It’s useless to do it as a one off course so to add variation I ask my students ‘what do you guys want to know more about’,” he said.

Woonona resident Leah Heaton, 19, said self- defence programs were becoming more prevalent in the Illawarra area.

“Several of my friends have experienced harassment and went out clubbing and to know that this program has opened up has put my mind at ease for them,” Miss Heaton said.

The women’s self-defence course aims to equip participants with practical personal safety techniques while fostering empowerment through education and community.

“Doing a program like this would build confidence and self esteem for people like myself or my friends who have dealt with abuse in environments where these skills may be needed.”

Beyond just self-defence, the program aims to build connections, enhance confidence and make the learning experience enjoyable.

Mr Serra said the holistic approach makes the courses both practical and enriching, which he hopes will positively impact participants’ lives.

“The defence and learning part is important but I hope they get more social aspects from this sort of program,” Mr Verra said.

First 2 Strike is located in Woonona and the class runs every Tuesday from 7:30pm.
