A new shared path nearing completion in West Wollongong aims to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety while connecting key recreational spots in the area.
The path, which stretches along Reserve Street and Gilmore Street, will provide safer crossings and better access to Gilmore Park and the nearby tennis courts for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Wollongong City Council originally proposed this construction as a part of the Council’s Cycling Strategy 2030, a project designed to establish ‘vital links’ from West Wollongong to the foreshore, encouraging sustainable travel options.
Resident Vi Molnar, who has lived on Reserve Street for around 40 years, had some initial concerns when the construction began.
“I was worried that the new pedestrian refuge and island would take away space for street parking,” Mrs Molnar said.
“But it’s good to see that they have made room for that.” She said.

This particular shared path is the latest addition to an existing, but newly built, path that runs through the reserve at Fairy Creek, creating a new link to the nearby primary school.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing more people out and about, walking and cycling,” Mrs Molnar said.
“I think it will really bring some more life into the area,
“It’s nice to know we’ll have something that makes our streets safer and more welcoming.”
The construction on Reserve Street is due to be completed by the end of the year.
