Menangle Markets re-opens after almost a decade

Menangle Markets was filled with people as it re-opened for the first time in almost a decade on Saturday.

Hundreds of patrons braved chilly weather to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds on offer at Tabcorp Park Menangle.

Event organising director Valery Borg said it was heartening to see so many families attend.

“I used to bring my children to this markets, and we needed something back here for people to come to,” Mrs Borg said.

She said the re-opening was an opportunity to help families make memories of their own.

The market is now one of the largest in the area, and boasts over 120 stalls filled with hand-made food, fashion, crafts and décor.

“It’s good that it’s back. It’s great- just like to used to be,” a patron said.

Live music entertained the crowds of people as they strolled around the stalls and gathered on picnic blankets and tables with food.

“They come for the experience. I think it’s more like going to a party than going to a shop,” stallholder Craig Ray said.

He said the most exciting part about markets like Menangle was interacting with people enjoying themselves.

Mrs Borg, also a stallholder, said it was important to support small business owners.

“I’m not here to make money. I’m here to help support the old and the young make money,” she said.

She said many stallholders are pensioners or young adults who make their livelihoods by selling their handmade goods.

However, Mrs Borg said patron experience was the most important part of Menangle Markets.

She said was thrilled with Saturday’s turn-out, and was excited for the future of Menangle Markets.

“It’s just what it used to be: a family day,” Mrs Borg said.

“They get to stay and have things to do. I just want to grow it and bring something more to it every month.”

Menangle Markets is open 9am-2pm on the third Saturday of every month at Tabcorp Park, Menangle.
