NSW should soon be experiencing major reforms to the way in which Aboriginal students are supported within schools. Announced by NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Victor Domenillo, the new changes will aim to keep indigenous students in school and on track for a successful career.
Coming in under a program, OCHRE it will include a number of initiatives including five new Aboriginal Language and Culture Centre Nests that will help teach and pass on Australian Aboriginal languages.
The program will also include ‘opportunity hubs’ that aim to introduce students to the workforce early. The program too will include the already established connected communities strategy that looks at how best to educate Aboriginal communities identified as vulnerable.
OCHRE was developed after consultation with 3000 people within the community and Minister Domenillo has stated it will help bring the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians together.
