Illawarra Junior Soccer is introducing a points-per-game system for the divisions that missed games due to weather washouts through the season calendar.
Wollongong United FC, under 18s player, Patrick Vaughn has explained how the season changed with the introduction of the system in which teams progress through the ladder, instead of the normal three-point system from a win.
“If you won one game you would go up like two positions on the table and if you lost you end up on the bottom of the table,” Vaughn said.
Vaughn added that the main reason for the introduction of the new system into the junior divisions was in consideration of the games having to be cancelled due to wet weather.
“Because we had so many games get washed out we got points per game at the end of the season”, Vaughn said.
Soccer player Luis Vaughn said the temporary game reward system didn’t impact their season negatively but supported them in their campaign in winning the Under 18s division.
“Before the finals, when the table was finished, we came second or third but then we still made it into the finals,” he said.
Besides the new system for the Illawarra soccer divisions, he said that the season ended with a victory against Shellharbour with a stoppage-time winner to seal the grand-final win.
“It was a tough game they scored just before halftime and then we scored a late goal maybe like five minutes to go into extra time and we scored again in extra time so it was pretty cool,” he said.
There is yet to be confirmation if the wins-per-game system will be employed again for next season.
