Inside Illawarra: Local breakdancer chasing gold on the world stage

    Paige JenkinsBy Paige JenkinsMay 20, 2026Updated:May 20, 2026No Comments1 Min Read

Hip Hop International (HHI) two time silver medalist Nathan Garrick joined Inside Illawarra hosts Ivy and Paige to discuss his break-dancing journey.

Mr Garrick found his passion for dancing in primary school and spent his formative years in a crew called ‘Sweet Feet’.

“We trained so much. We lost for most of our career. And then eventually something just worked and we ran with it and we did well,” Mr Garrick said.

Now, he competes in a solo division and spends most of his time working with his students as they gain traction on the stage. With his studio Street Beatz, Mr Garrick facilitates the next generation of break-dancers with their recent addition of a class for nine and ten-year-olds.

Alongside three of his teams and a student solo, Mr Garrick competed at last Saturday’s Australian Dance Crew Championships in the Open Soloist Division, finishing with a silver medal. He spoke of his ultimate goal to win a gold medal on the international stage.

“Red Bull BC One, it’s like a dream of mine to go to the international stage, but that’s only 16 people in the whole world,” he said.
