Wollondilly businesses have benefited from an influx of customers to this year’s Illuminate festival which has attracted thousands of tourists to the area.
The Illuminate Wollondilly Festival, held over three nights, is one of the most anticipated annual events in the Wollondilly region, drawing tourists and locals alike to the heart of Picton’s CBD.
With a wide range of family-friendly activities, light displays, and cultural experiences, this year’s festival proved to be a vibrant showcase.
Food stall worker Liam Price said the festival was a family event.
“This event is such a draw for Picton. We rely heavily on tourism, and Illuminate has become one of those events people travel for,” he said.
“While we hoped for a slightly bigger crowd, the ones who came were really engaged and curious to see what the town has to offer.”
The event featured eye-catching light installations, bustling markets, carnival rides, live musical performances, art displays, and even a formal dinner held in the scenic Picton Botanical Gardens.
The festival is especially important for the local business community, which relies heavily on tourism.
Picton and the wider Wollondilly region have been gaining popularity as a tourist destination for Sydneysiders and visitors from farther afield, seeking a weekend escape or to explore the town’s historic and natural beauty.
Large-scale events like Illuminate and the Thirlmere Steam Festival have played a crucial role in boosting the local economy, drawing thousands of visitors who support small businesses and local vendors.
Stall owner Katherine Lowe said the festival always had a positive impact on the region’s small businesses.
“Events like Illuminate give us a chance to connect with people who might not usually visit Picton,” she said.
Ms Lowe said that as Illuminate Wollondilly continues to grow in both scope and popularity, it reinforces the importance of tourism for the town’s future.
