AUSTI. Dance and Physical Theatre’s residency project, uNCOILEd eXposed, will be returning for its fourth annual season, running at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in October, from the 17th to the 19th.
uNCOILEd eXposed has organised to showcase three innovative pieces from choreographers Fiona Larkin, Elizabeth Arifien, and Mara Glass. Each of these performances representing the pinnacle of what AUSTI.’s residency program has to offer.
Elizabeth Arifien plans an emotive performance interwoven with digital elements. Arifien’s work aims to create a collage of rediscovered moments, blending physical and digital storytelling to evoke deep emotional responses.
“My choreographic style is multilayered, using other art forms to enrich movement and storytelling,” Miss Arifien said.
Mara Glass, who took inspiration from Japanese artist Hiroyuki Doi, will be contributing with A Universe in Tiny Form. Glass’ work explores the connection between fixation and loss while considering Doi’s enduring habit of making circle drawings as a coping mechanism.
“I start with a framework but let the dancers’ voices and experiences shape the work, this piece is a reflection of both personal and collective perspectives emphasising different experiences of grief, through artistic collaboration with the AUSTI dancers,” Miss Glass said.
Fiona Larkin, a company artist with AUSTI. is offering her piece Collide, a dynamic analysis of energy exchanges via modern movement and collaboration. Larkin’s work will explore how dancers might move through space with both continuous and sporadic momentum, drawing on the concepts of elastic and inelastic collisions.
“Collide is an exploration of collisions and momentum in dance, the work is a result of improvisational exploration and task-based creation, to generate advanced partnering moments,” Miss Larkin said.
uNCOILEd eXposed was the Illawarra’s first outcome-based contemporary dance residency, honouring fresh talent while paying tribute to the memory of Nicole Fitzsimons, a close friend of Artistic Director Michelle Maxwell and supporter of AUSTI. Dance and Physical Theatre.
Audiences will have the chance to witness the cutting-edge dance and support the next generation of choreographers at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre this October.
