    How uni students use AI

    Nearly four in five Australian university students now use artificial intelligence tools in their studies, according to recent national study, escalating concerns about legitimate academic achievement in the age of AI.

    What once was a probational technology has swiftly become intrinsic to student life.

    A national survey of Australian university students administered by researchers Samantha Newell and Sophie Dahlenburg has revealed that generative AI use has become common.

    Students increasingly rely on tools such as ChatGPT to generate coursework, condense readings and brainstorm ideas.

    Because of this, Australian universities are facing the most consequential change in learning since the introduction of the internet.

    The illusion of competence

    Many students argue that AI tools simplify and personalise the learning experience.

    For University of Wollongong music and creative arts student Matisse Pearce, the AI tool ChatGPT is beneficial for brainstorming and structure.

    “When I’m unsure about an assessment brief, ChatGPT explains it in greater detail,” Miss Pearce said.

    “It establishes what is required of me and helps with structuring my essays,” she said.

    But researcher Jason Lodge, in an article for The Conversation, has warned that AI assistance may cultivate an ‘illusion of competence.’

    “Generative AI provides clear, polished responses. This can cause students to overestimate how much they have learned and signal that deep mental engagement is no longer necessary,” Mr Lodge said.

    The performance paradox

    The national student survey, delivered at the 2024 ASCILITE (Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education) conference, has detailed how university students integrate AI in their studies.

    Many students expressed implementing AI as a companionate study tool to clarify concepts, provide feedback, form study notes and structure essays.

    This approach reflected a greater transformation in learning behaviour.

    Time-consuming tasks that once demanded intensive reading, note-taking and drafting are now completed in seconds with the assistance of AI.

    University of New South Wales, accounting graduate, Billy Harding said AI helped significantly in his final year.

    “I was balancing full-time uni, a part-time job at an accounting firm and trying to maintain some kind of a social life,” Mr Harding said.

    “When I started using AI to help with assignments, it made things easier. It’s not because I was offloading the work, but because the study notes and essay structures that would take up so much of my time no longer did.”

    But the convenience is met with equal consequence.

    Mr Lodge cautioned that AI could reduce the cognitive effort essential for learning and further what is known as the ‘performance paradox’.

    “There is a growing body of evidence that suggests using AI can undermine the effort required for sustainable, deep learning,” Mr Lodge said.

    “The performance paradox is where students’ short-term performance on tasks may improve with AI, but their long-term learning is being harmed.”

    Cognitive offloading

    ‘Cognitive offloading’ is the concern that outsourcing foundational knowledge to AI will weaken a student’s cognitive function and problem-solving skills.

    “Long-term learning can take time and needs effort. If AI is used to replace the struggle of learning, there is a risk of the erosion of cognitive skills,” Mr Lodge said.

    The continued discipline involved in reading difficult texts, revising ideas and allowing error pushes students towards independent and nuanced thought.

    AI shortcuts this, Mr Lodge said.

    It instantly generates a solution to what would normally require hours of dedicated reading and note-taking, he said.

    But this only inflates a student’s sense of understanding without having the depth of knowledge necessary to confidently provide an informed opinion.

    Mr Lodge added that reliance on AI creates a loop of cognitive offloading and information regurgitation.

    “The ease of AI-generated responses erodes a student’s actual knowledge base, making them more dependent on the tool and less able to judge its accuracy in the future,” he said.

    Students forego the time spent actively learning in favour of a faster method.

    The new rules

    As AI advances, universities are forced to review traditional assessment and examination.

    Essays and reflections are becoming particularly vulnerable to AI assistance.

    To combat this, many universities have revised academic integrity policies, remodelled assessments and imposed guidelines surrounding acceptable use of AI.

    The consensus remains divided.

    Students argue that universities should embrace AI as part of the future.

    “AI is a good tool for determining where to start or refining coursework before submission, but it shouldn’t do the work for you,” Ms Pearce said.

    “It isn’t inherently unethical but it does depend on how you use it.”

    Others worry universities risk exporting graduates who can regurgitate content without fully understanding the depth of the information.

    “Critical thinking is not a generic skill – it is deeply intertwined with knowledge,” Mr Lodge said.

    “As powerful as AI might be, humans learn better with and from other humans.”

    This is complicated further by how difficult it is to determine a student’s use of AI from support to total dependence.

    “My use of AI was definitely supportive,” Mr Harding said.

    “It depends on what you’re asking of it. You can ask it to advise you as a study companion or do the work for you.”

    Unlike conventional plagiarism, AI-assisted work typically generates original, user-specific text which cannot be reliably detected by current technology, problematising how universities distinguish legitimate learning.

    AI and the future of education

    As universities adapt to AI, research surrounding its long-term impacts remains limited.

    But AI is no longer an experimental novelty.

    In less than three years, the technology has become pivotal for many university students.

    For universities, the challenge lies in preserving the intellectual pursuit of learning.

    The research shows that the question is no longer whether students will use AI, but how universities will ensure that the technology helps rather than hurts the learning process.
