Heyday Bar has hosted its monthly Gayday event which featured a ‘Denim and Diamonds Disco’ dress theme and beloved drag royalty from Wollongong’s LGBTQ+ community.
Gayday has been described as ‘Wollongong’s most inclusive and fabulous event’, regularly promoting exuberant themes, exclusive performances and acceptance of all attendees since May 2022.
Drag queen Lui Lilac, emphasised the community values of the event, which encourages all present to embrace themselves and those around them.
“It’s good for having queer people come together,” Ms Lilac said.
“You make friends and meet new people.”
As Wollongong’s most prevalent queer-centred club night, Gayday implements a ‘Safe Space Policy’, strictly eliminating discriminatory conduct and allowing performers and attendees alike to embrace their sexual identity.
“You feel welcome in a gay club, no matter who you are,” Ms Lilac said
“It’s less fearful for the community.”
Gayday is a rare occasion for those in and around the LGBTQ+ communities to share in the flamboyant world of queer self expression.
First time Gayday attendee Lauren Hannig, 20, said that the importance of engaging with inclusive social events in Wollongong is instrumental for the celebration of the queer community.
“It’s such a unique and varied culture,” Miss Hannig said.
“It’s important that it be shared to those willing to participate and learn.”
Miss Hanning said social events such as Gayday are leading the charge for positive inclusion for marginalised groups in an effort to bring people of all sexualities and identities together.
“It’s got me excited about making connections within my community that I haven’t had the chance to explore before,” Miss Hannig said.
Local organisations and businesses such as Heyday Bar and Wollongong City Council are continuously working on creating more safe spaces and resources for all members of the LBGTQIA+ community.
