Coal sculpture takes out top prize in Wollongong

The winner of the inaugural Acquisitive Sculpture Competition was revealed this morning at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens.

Sculptor and artist Louis Pratt won the $30,000 prize for his piece ‘King Coal’.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery made the announcement. He said the sculpture competition was to mark the bicentenary of the region.

Mr Pratt said the sculpture represented an arrogant man, defiant in the face of a changing region. With his arms folded, the sculpture is a composite material of fibreglass, resin, coal dust and steel.

Twice the size of an average man, the installation sits in a quiet, shaded area of the botanic gardens.
