When Portuguese colonists took slaves from West Africa and brought them to Brazil in the 16th century, captives were strictly forbidden to practice martial arts.
As a way around the prohibition, violent kicks under the guise of rhythmic movements began to emerge in the dances of the slaves.
Thus, ‘capoeira’ was born; a martial art infused dance that once-upon-a-time was used to rebel against masters, preserve tradition and ultimate escape captivity.
Capoeira is still practised today.
