Downhill mountain bike riders have gathered in Cairns for the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.

Campbelltown resident Kellie Weinert was among those representing Australia after years of rigorous training in local events.

“It’s the pinnacle of the sport and all the best are going to be there,” Ms Weinert said in preparation for the competition.

The prestigious event brings together 527 riders representing a total of 46 nations.

Ms Weinert secured 13th place in the Women Elite category with Canadian Miranda Miller taking first place.

She spoke with reporter Melissa Stenner prior to competing.
